NNP JITUME LAB

In March 2024, H.E President William Samoei Ruto officially opened the Nyeri National Polytechnic’s Jitume ICT Lab and Open, Distance and e-Learning (ODeL) Centre, marking a significant step in Kenya’s journey toward building an inclusive Digital and Creative Economy under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
This modern facility is a 24/7 digital workspace that has already begun to bridge the gap between education and employment.
It brings together the Jitume Lab, which provides digital skills training and the Ajira Digital Program, which connects users to real online jobs.
The lab supports open, distance and e-learning, allowing students at Nyeri National Polytechnic to continue their education with flexibility and convenience.
The facility’s reach extends beyond the institution. Residents from the surrounding communities also have access to the lab, turning it into a digital common space for knowledge, opportunity and income.
At full capacity, the lab hosts 1,368 clusters of users and can record upto 1544 active sessions, a clear indication of its growing importance as a digital productivity hub and the Digital Superhighway as a functional pathway to youth empowerment.
So far, the youth using the facility have collectively earned over 8 million dollars through digital gigs and online freelance work across 43 global platforms. These earnings are transforming lives.
Young people like Wafula, who consistently earns between $600–$800 monthly, Odhiambo, with $500–$600 and Trevor, who averages between $100–$300, are living proof of the potential embedded in digital talent.
