Head Of Department's Message
The Mechanical and Automotive Engineering is one of the most diverse, versatile and broadest engineering disciplines. Graduates in this field are highly sought after by potential employers in areas of applications such as in Automotive, industrial Organization and Management, Manufacturing, Materials Engineering, Quality Control and Assurance.
Presently, the department ranks top countrywide in terms of facilities, machines and state-of-the art equipment. We have sufficient, highly qualified and dedicated CBET trainers who prepare our students to meet the required talents, skills, and knowledge.
The department maintains three modern workshops, a metrology laboratory, two drawing rooms and a computer laboratory.

About The Department
The Department of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering at the Nyeri National Polytechnic offers a wide range of courses conforming to the Kenya National Qualification Framework (KNQF). These include qualifications for Mechanical Production Technicians, Motor Vehicle Mechanics, Welding and Fabrication, Lathe Machine Operation. In addition to these the Automotive Engineering Section has a driving school offering NTSA approved training for vehicles of classes A2, B and C.
Our Teaching Style
Our workshops are interactive and hands-on. We provide trainees with the opportunity to learn by doing. We also use case studies and real-world examples to help students understand how the concepts they are learning apply in the real world.

Mechanical and Automotive Engineering Workshops
Our mechanical and automotive engineering workshop is a state-of-the-art facility that provides students, researchers, and industry professionals with the resources they need to design, build, and test mechanical systems. Our workshop is equipped with a wide range of tools and equipment, including CNC machines, conventional lathes and milling machines, welding and fabrication equipment, CAD/CAM software, MMAW/TIG/MIG/OAW welding machines, band saws, pedestal grinders, electric furnace, universal milling machine, gear hobbing cutting machine, 4 tone hoist, hydraulic press, battery charger, car diagnostic kit, beam setter machine, pedestal drill etc.
Our workshop is open to students, researchers, and industry professionals of all levels of experience. We offer a variety of workshops and training courses that are designed to meet the needs of beginners as well as experienced engineers.

Technicians
The department is also well- staffed with 5 technicians who are highly experienced and knowledgeable, with hands on skills and they are available to provide assistance with all aspects of your project, from design and feasibility assessment to material selection and fabrication. We offer a variety of workshops and training courses on mechanical engineering topics, and we are also happy to accommodate custom projects.
Our Courses
The Automotive Mechatronic Technology Level 6 qualification consists of competencies that a person must achieve to enable him/her to service and maintain motor vehicles in the motorvehicle service and repair industry.
The Automotive Technician Level 5 qualification consists of competencies that a person must achieve to enable him/her to service and maintain motor vehicles in the motor vehicle service and repair industry.
The Motor cycle mechanic Level 4 qualification consists of competencies that a person must achieve to enable him/her to service and maintain motorcycles.
The Motor vehicle Level 4 qualification consists of competencies that a person must achieve to enable him/her to repair electrical systems for motor vehicles.
This course is designed to equip Mechanical Productions Technicians with the competencies required to perform sheet metal work, grinding, lathe work, milling, forging operations, join parts by manual arc welding, gas welding, MIG/MAG welding, TIG welding and CNC machining.
This course is designed to equip Mechanical Production Machine Operators with the competencies required to perform lathe work, milling and general fitting operations.
Welding And Fabrication Technician qualification consists of competencies that a person must achieve to enable him/her to Perform fabrication process, Perform Metal Arc Welding Operations, Carry Out Gas Welding Operations, Carry Out MIG/MAG Welding Operations, carry out TIG inert welding operation and carry out finishing process operations.
Manual metal gas and arc welder qualification consists of competencies that a person must achieve to enable him/her to perform manual metal arc welding (MMAW) and perform oxy-acetylene gas welding.
This course is designed to equip an Lathe Machine Operator with the competencies required in performing lathe operations.
This course is designed to equip gas welder with the competencies required to perform gas welding operations.
Manual Metal Arc Welder qualification consists of competencies that a person must achieve to enable him/her to perform manual arc welding operations.

The section has been equipped with state of the art tools and equipment that has greatly improved the quality of training in the department. The section has also supplemented in supplying the equipment and materials needed for training. Although Automotive Engineering courses attract few female trainees, we encourage female trainees to enroll for Engineering courses since they stand high chances of getting employment faster.

Mechanical Engineering
The Mechanical Engineering section is one of the pioneer departments in The Nyeri National Polytechnic, having been started in 1977.
The major objective of the department is to meet the requirements of the industries in the field of Mechanical Engineering and therefore to train students in this field.
The Department is vibrant, due to dynamic and competent technical staff members, as well as our enthusiastic and hardworking trainees. Our staff members are trained at highly-reputable Universities and Colleges all over Kenya, with specialized knowledge and Skills that run the gamut of Mechanical Engineering, ranging from basic Mechanical Engineering to Advanced Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM).
