A Message from the HOD

Welcome to the Department of Applied Sciences at the Nyeri National Polytechnic. We are one of the oldest Departments at NNP that prides itself on high-quality Alumni who are nationally and globally recognized. We pride ourselves in our exemplary skilling and research programmes in the TVET institutes. Our main aim is to train Natural Scientists, food scientists and dairy processors with enhanced transferable skills, as well as producing graduates with hands-on experience at the end of their studies. Apart from academics, we have full operation production units in portable water, yoghurt, processed wine, sausage, and non-alcoholic drinks. I therefore take this earliest opportunity to welcome prospective trainees and other stakeholders to the Department of Applied sciences, home of skills and innovation. About the Department

The Department of Applied Sciences at the Nyeri National Polytechnic offers a wide range of courses conforming to the Kenya National Qualification Framework (KNQF). These include qualifications for Geo-science technologists, food science technicians, science laboratory technicians, analytical chemistry technologists, statisticians, and industrial chemistry technologists. Firefighter technician. The department also offers professional development courses in food safety. Apart from academics, the department runs a water purification and treatment system, a wine processing and production unit, a sausage processing unit, and a dairy processing plant, which are well equipped with high-tech equipment. These production units are used as skill areas for our trainees in the department.

Our Water Bottling Plant

Dr. Esther Thaara Muoria, PhD, CBS, officially launched NNP Bottled Mineral Water, dubbed The Aberdare Wells.

Our Dairy Processing Plant

Dr.Esther Thaara Muoria, PS State Department for Vocational and Technical Training and Christopher Thornley, Canadian High Commissioner, during the handover ceremony of state-of-the-art dairy training equipment at the Nyeri National Polytechnic. This training equipment has been donated through Kenya Education for Employment Program (KEFEP), launched in 2016 to support the revitalization of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system. The program has been funded by the Government of Canada through Global Affairs Canada and implemented by Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan). The new equipment supports the Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) courses, allowing students to work on equipment currently used in the industry. It provides practical experience and competence in equipment operation, use and maintenance. So far, two cohorts have been trained on how to use the equipment, including making dairy products such as yoghurt and cheese.

Our Teaching Style

Our workshops are interactive and hands-on. We provide trainees with the opportunity to learn by carrying out more practical. The courses offered in the department are modularized hence 90 % of learning hours are skilled -based which are done in the workshops.
