NNP Conducts its First Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Assessment

The Nyeri National Polytechnic (NNP) has taken another major step in skills development after successfully conducting its first-ever Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) assessment.

The institution said Thursday, 18 January 2024 marked the final day of the RPL Summative Assessment for candidates in the third cohort, an exercise that gave skilled individuals a chance to have their practical abilities formally tested and certified.

Speaking on the milestone, NNP Chief Principal Dr. David Mwangi described the exercise as a proud moment for the institution.

“The Nyeri National Polytechnic conducted its first ever Recognition of Prior Learning. Thursday 18/01/2024 marked the last day of the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Summative Assessment for the Third Cohort candidates,” said Dr. Mwangi.

He noted that NNP has continued to stand out nationally, especially in curriculum development and assessment.

“The Nyeri Poly is the only institution in Kenya that has developed a curriculum in Cosmetology Level 6 and assessed under RPL as well. Congratulations!” he added.

Recognition of Prior Learning is a process that allows people with skills gained through work, experience, or informal training to be assessed and awarded official certification. This helps artisans and skilled workers improve their chances of getting better jobs, growing their careers, or advancing their training.

Across the country, RPL is becoming more important as Kenya works to ensure skills are recognised, even for those who did not go through formal classroom training. The government has continued to promote RPL as part of its broader plan to improve access to certification and increase opportunities for skilled workers.

NNP’s achievement adds momentum to this national effort and positions the institution as a key player in supporting inclusive, quality training and certification.
