On behalf of the The Nyeri National Polytechnic Council, I am pleased to welcome you all to The Nyeri National Polytechnic website. The Nyeri National Polytechnic is currently managed by a Council.
The Nyeri National Polytechnic started as a National Technical Secondary School in 1977. In 1983, the status changed to a Technical Training Institute. In 2016, it was elevated to a National Polytechnic through Legal Notice Number 91 according to the Nyeri Polytechnic Order 2016. I wish to take this opportunity to thank the Ministry of Education on behalf of the Council and the entire fraternity for finding us worthy of this elevation. With a national outlook the Polytechnic is exposed to a larger catchment area thereby aligning itself to the National values as well as promoting National Cohesion and Integration. This has awakened us to mount more competency- based courses to our trainees. All this is geared towards the realization of the vision 2030.
The Polytechnic has made great achievements in the physical infrastructure. Through the government funding, we have been able to put up a new tuition block complex which is almost complete. This will ease congestion in our lecture rooms and provide adequate space for more enrolment. The Building and Civil Engineering Complex, which has been funded by the government through the Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP), is also complete. The complex houses the Building Technology and Civil Engineering workshops, lecture halls and offices.
Another achievement is the construction and equipping of the Mechanical Engineering building with state-of -the -art equipment in the Phase One of The GoK/ADB programme. It houses tuition rooms, workshops, labs and staff offices. After the installation of machines and equipment, all Mechanical Engineering lecturers were trained in machine operation procedures.
Capacity Building has also not been left out. Five (5) lecturers were sponsored for Bachelor of Science degrees in Engineering and one (1) for Diploma in Automotive Engineering at Technical University of Mombasa. In the second phase, 7 lecturers were enrolled at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology and The Technical University of Kenya to undertaking degree programmes in Engineering
We received and installed Smart Classroom equipment funded by the government which are currently the most modern way of curriculum delivery through use of Digital Content.
The Polytechnic has also made tremendous improvements in the area of ICT through upgrading of the Management Information System (MIS), improvement of the Wi-Fi infrastructure, and stabilization of the internet provision by subscribing for more bandwidth from a stable ISP. Connection of all the blocks via the optic fiber has commenced with Mechanical Engineering workshop (ADB) and Buildings & Civil Engineering (ESP) having been connected. In terms of security improvement, CCTV cameras have also been installed in strategic areas within the Polytechnic.
We intend to construct sheltered paved walkways to link all the major buildings within the Polytechnic. This will enhance cleanliness in our environment.
The Nyeri National Polytechnic is a home of champions. In July 2014, our team of three students and a trainer participated in the first African Tech Challenge (ATC) competition held at the Technical University of Kenya. We emerged the 2nd best overall among 18 teams. As a result of this victory one of the students from the Polytechnic, who was the second best participant was awarded a scholarship to study a Master of Science degree in Mechanical and Automation Engineering at Beihang University in China. Another student has already been offered a job by AVIC International. The institution was also awarded a manufacturing contract by AVIC International to manufacture spare parts. The spare parts consignment manufactured in the institute was flagged off for shipping to China by the CS Ministry of education, on 3rd June, 2016 at Kabete National Polytechnic. It was the first spare parts export Kenya has ever made in history.
In collaboration with Automobile Association Kenya (AA-Kenya) we undertake driving lessons for our trainees and the staff. We also believe in linking the Polytechnic with Industry and in collaboration, the KCB Bank have sponsored some Jua Kali artisans to acquire certificates in vocational and enterprise development skills in a range of technical courses.
