DEAN OF STUDENTS

Mr. Job Muthui

Dean Of Students

Office of the Dean of Students

Welcome to the Office of the Dean of Students at The Nyeri National Polytechnic. Our primary goal is to support, guide, and empower our trainees throughout their academic journey and personal development. We are committed to creating a nurturing, inclusive, and vibrant environment where every trainee can thrive and reach their full potential.

The Dean of Students’ office is responsible for the welfare, discipline, and holistic development of all trainees. We serve as a bridge between trainees and the administration, ensuring that trainee voices are heard and their needs addressed in a timely and professional manner.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinating trainee welfare programs, including accommodation and healthcare services
  • Overseeing trainee discipline and promoting a culture of responsibility and respect
  • Supporting trainee leadership and governance through the Students’ Welfare Association of the Nyeri National Polytechnic (SWANNP)
  • Guiding student clubs, societies, and co-curricular activities

Catering and accommodation

Catering and accommodation services are offered under the management of a cateress. The Polytechnic runs a ‘Pay As You Eat system’ (PAYE) for the catering services with the menu prepared by the cateress in consultation with the Dean of Students.

Accommodation facilities are provided on first come first served basis save for trainees with special needs.  Orphans, sponsored trainees and those from marginalized areas are also considered.

With the growing population, the Management leased a premises, with a capacity of four hundred, at Skuta estate in Nyeri town in the month of August 2024 and it began operating in September the same year.

Clubs and Societies

The Polytechnic has ten registered and active clubs namely; Presidents award, Wildlife, Tourism, Scouts, Peer Counselors, Red Cross, Creative arts, Care, Go Green Movement St. Johns Ambulance and Rotaract. These clubs contribute to holistic education, helping trainees develop academically, socially, and emotionally.

There are four registered religious societies: Catholic Action (CA), Christian Union (CU), Muslim and Seventh Day Adventists (SDA), each with elected officials, a patron and an assistant patron. The societies are expected to prepare a schedule of activities at the beginning of every semester and present it to the Dean’s office for coordination.

Trainee Governance

The Polytechnic has a Students’ Welfare Association (SWANNP) governed by fifteen elected members: the President, Deputy President, Secretary General, Finance Minister, Academic affairs minister, Sports ministers (Male and Female), Hostels ministers (Male and Female), Gender and Social affairs ministers (Male and Female), Environment minister, Special needs ministers (Male and Female) and the Devout Societies minister.

Elections for these positions are conducted by the IEBC every year in the month of May. These roles offer trainees the chance to manage teams and hone their leadership skills.

Health Care

The Polytechnic has a dispensary with a bed capacity of eight and is managed by two full time nursing officers, a male and a female. It is well stocked with basic medical drugs and open to referrals to the nearby Mt. Kenya level 4 and Nyeri County level 5 hospitals.
