Overview
The Examinations Office at The Nyeri National Polytechnic plays a vital role in managing and coordinating all aspects of competency-based assessment (CBA) and certification. The office ensures that assessment processes are aligned with national standards and supports the institution’s mission of delivering globally competitive training, research, and consultancy.
Our work is grounded in the Competency Based Assessment and Certification Framework approved by the Polytechnic Council, which outlines the procedures, roles, and guidelines that govern assessments across all departments.
Our Mandate
- Coordinate the registration of candidates, assessors, verifiers, and assessment centers.
- Oversee preparation, scheduling, and administration of internal and external assessments.
- Facilitate development, validation, and storage of assessment tools.
- Ensure fair marking, verification, and grading of assessments.
- Manage a portfolio of evidence (PoE) for all trainees.
- Handle appeals and re-assessment procedures.
- Issue certificates and transcripts to successful candidates.
Key Responsibilities
- Registrar Examination:
- Oversee all assessments and maintain records of certified trainees.
- Prepares assessment schedules.
- Advises on policies to ensure smooth running of assessments.
- Assessment Center Officer:
- Manages assessment timetables, registration, and tools Development.
- Keeps records from registration to certification.
- Ensures secure administration of all assessment materials.
- Internal and External Verifiers:
- Validate and ensure quality and fairness of assessment tools and results.
- Participate in verification, marking, and appeals resolution.
- Trainers/Internal Assessors:
- Guide and assess trainees based on approved competency standards.
- Develop and validate assessment tools in line with institutional guidelines.
Assessment Process
Assessments at NNP are conducted continuously and practically throughout training. They include:
- Written and oral tests
- Projects and case studies
- Practical tasks and demonstrations
The weighting between theory and practice depends on the course level, with a minimum pass mark of 50% (or 40% for Special Needs candidates)
Certification and Results
- Candidates who demonstrate competence receive:
- Certificates of Competency
- National Certificates
- Results are validated internally and externally to ensure accuracy.
- Students have the right to appeal assessment outcomes within 7 days of receiving provisional results.
Support for Special Needs Candidates
The office ensures inclusive assessment practices, offering:
- Modified tools (Braille, large print, simplified language)
- Assistive technologies
- Extra time or personal assistants as needed
