Dual Training at The Nyeri National Polytechnic

Dual training is a strategic approach to technical and vocational education and training (TVET) that integrates theoretical classroom instruction with practical on-the-job training. Traditional TVET programs have been criticized for not adequately preparing students for the practical demands of the workplace. The dual training system, which has been successfully implemented in countries like Germany, offers a solution by combining academic learning with hands-on experience.

General Objectives

The primary objectives of implementing dual training are:

  • To understand the constraints of working life and functional relationships within and between organizations
  • To provide trainees with practical skills and work experience alongside theoretical knowledge.
  • To bridge the gap between education and industry requirements.
  • To enhance the employability and productivity of TVET graduates.

Schedule of Dual Training Programs

The schedule for dual training typically involves alternating periods of theoretical education at the Polytechnic and practical training at a company. The program is organized in blocks of three months, equivalent to a term. Generally, level five (certificate) courses have six blocks; all odd blocks (1, 3, and 5) are scheduled for training at the Polytechnic while all even blocks (2, 4 and 6) are scheduled for practical training in the industry. The level six (diploma) courses have eight blocks; similarly, all odd blocks are for training at the Polytechnic while all even blocks are for training at the industry. Trainees sit for summative examinations at the end of every block at the Polytechnic while the industry trainer (mentor) does the assessment of work behavior, knowledge and practical skills as demonstrated by the trainee under their mentorship.

  • Curriculum Development

The Polytechnic has co-created competency-based curricula with input from industry experts and educational institutions. This ensures the curriculum aligns with current industry standards and future job market needs.

  • Industry Partnerships

The Polytechnic has continued to establish and strengthen partnerships between the institution and industry players. It has developed agreements with companies to provide training placements and mentorship.

  • Institutional Capacity Building

The trainers with dual training classes and workplace supervisors continue to receive training and guidance to effectively deliver and manage dual training programs. Together they have developed training plans which delineate what is to be taught at the Polytechnic and what is to be taught at the industry. The Polytechnic has also ensured that the necessary infrastructure and resources to support both classroom and practical training is available.

  • Student Placement and Support

The Polytechnic facilitates the placement of trainees in relevant industries for their practical training component. During this period, trainers continue to provide ongoing support and monitoring to ensure quality and address any challenges.

  • Monitoring and Evaluation

The Polytechnic monitors the implementation of the programs to assess the effectiveness of the dual training. Feedback from trainees, educators, and industry partners is gathered to continuously improve the program.

Stakeholders and Expected Outcomes

Key stakeholders in the implementation of dual training at the Polytechnic include:

  1. Government Agencies: Ministry of Education, Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA), and other relevant bodies.
  2. Educational Institutions: TVET institutions and polytechnics.
  3. Industry Partners: Companies and industry associations willing to participate in the dual training system.
  4. Trainees: TVET trainees who will benefit from the enhanced training and work experience.
  5. Donors and Development Partners: Organizations that can provide funding, expertise, and support specifically the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ).

We expect the dual training programme to have:

  1. Improved quality of TVET programs and alignment with industry needs.
  2. Increased employability and job readiness of TVET graduates.
  3. Stronger partnerships between educational institutions and industry.
  4. Enhanced reputation and attractiveness of TVET programs.
